The Advice is made up of three parts: type of crimes, relevant evidence and how to deal with the evidence. Type of crimes lists 7 common crimes you may meet. How to deal with the evidence, tells you what you should or shouldn’t do when you deal with the relevant evidence.
Don’t clean or tidy up any damage, vandalism or graffiti without contacting the police first. They can take photographs and collect any evidence.
Once you have the evidence you should try not to handle it. It should then be put into an envelope or cardboard box. Better not to put the evidence in a plastic bags, this may cause the evidence to sweat, which will ruin it.
You should contact the police to report any incidents and inform them of any evidence you may have.
With regards to suspicious packages – do not panic. Remember, such packages have generally been designed to travel through the postal system and be opened by the recipient. Therefore, they will withstand degrees of rough handling. When suspicions are aroused, isolate the item, evacuate the immediate area and contact the police immediately.
If you believe to have been sent a biological/ chemical package then follow the advice above but also switch off any air conditioners.
