RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION

S.A.R.I is now providing a support service for people who feel that they have been discriminated against because of their race or religion. The law recognises race to include colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origins and religion to include the absence of any religious belief.

S.A.R.I can help you tackle discrimination in the fields of employment and education and in the supply of goods or services.

Employment

Discrimination in the field of employment may occur in a number of ways:

   You may have been denied a job or promotion at work because of your race or religious beliefs.

•   Your employer may require you to complete tasks that are demeaning, humiliating or otherwise
      inappropriate for your skills or job grade.

   Your employer may have failed to take action against someone who has been bullying or harassing you
     whilst at work because or your race or religion, or could even have been tacitly encouraging it.

   You may feel that your employer is ostracising or victimising you because you have previously brought a
     complaint or have supported someone who has brought a complaint.

   Your employer may have policies in place which limit the ability of people from certain races to achieve set
     goals. This could be indirect discrimination and is also unlawful.

There are many different ways in which an employer may discriminate against you and S.A.R.I is on hand to help.

Education

School pupils, college and university students and adult learners may all experience discrimination from their education providers. This could take the form of:

•   Disproportionate sanctions against members of a certain racial or religious group;

  Humiliation by a member of the teaching staff

   Lack of concern over your wellbeing;

   Failure to take sufficient action against someone who has been bullying or harassing you.

You may also be the victim of unlawful discrimination if you are denied admission to a certain institution or are asked to meet certain criteria which are impossible for you to meet and which the institution cannot provide a justification for.

Goods and Services

A person, business or public service may be acting discriminatory in a number of different ways.

   You could have been denied entry to a shop, or prevented from making a purchase;

   A security guard may have singled you out for no apparent reason;

   If you have been the victim of a criminal offence, the police or other emergency services may not have
     provided you with a level of care that you would otherwise expect.;

   A department of your local council (such as Housing or Benefits) may have discriminated against you by
     providing a sub-standard level of service.

How We Can Help

  S.A.R.I can advise as to whether it appears that a claim exists and what evidence may be required for your
     claim to succeed in the Employment Tribunal or Civil Courts.

   We can provide an expert pastoral support service, helping you to deal with the stress and emotions that
     you may be experiencing.

   S.A.R.I can also approach those whom you feel may be discriminating against you and attempt to resolve
     your complaint without taking formal legal actions.

   Where there is an established complaints process, such as a company grievance procedure or the formal
     police complaints procedure, S.A.R.I can help draft letters and accompany you to meetings.

  In certain circumstances we may feel that Avon & Bristol Law Centre may be able to provide professional
     legal help and that a qualified solicitor may be able to help bring formal legal proceedings.
